Although I have been following "The Lost Colony" since the 1980s and have lived in nearby Nags Head since 2000, I had heard almost nothing about this tragedy.Journalist John Railey has done an exhaustive review of all the interviews, newspaper clippings, suspects, potential witnesses or accomplices, and local chatter to write "The Lost Colony Murder on the Outer Banks: Seeking Justice for Brenda Joyce Holland." Although I didn't move to this area until 33 years after the event, I was well acquainted with the names of many of the people who were interviewed and/or their relatives. My familiarity with the setting and the play made the book personal for me. I think anyone who has vacationed here or has seen the play will feel that connection.There are no spoilers when reviewing true crime books, but I will say that although no one was ever arrested, Railey puts together a plausible theory regarding the guilty party.
